I was thinking the same thing as Lisa, about the witch of En dor (I just finished teaching my Sunday school kids from I and II Samuel). But your explanation certainly makes good Biblical sense.

Having done some research in the past on the identity of "Samuel" brought up by the Witch of Endor, I'm convinced that what appeared was a "familiar spirit" or demon impersonating Samuel.

I Chron 10:13-14 makes it clear that God had nothing to do with "Samuel's" appearance:

13So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;

14And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

I've often wondered about the story in 1 Samuel 28:11-16ff when Saul supposedly conjured up the spirit of Samuel through the medium at Endor. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
