Arts & Culture: Do You Have a Special Place for Writing?

A Room of One’s Own

Bloggers are writers, and—like the famous Virginia Woolf—we require some sort of writing place,
a space we can call our own. A Room of One’s Own.

We’re creative types aren’t we? Lots of us use photography, video, and music to add another dimension to our blog posts. I suspect however, that the best writers among us opt for a blank page filled solely with words.

My office has moved around quite a lot in the past few years. As empty-nesters, we've been down-sizing. When I first began blogging in 2006, my office occupied half of our basement. I had a nice big IKEA desk with rolling drawer pedestals, a graphic layout table, and eight large bookcases.

Now my computer sits (and I slouch) at the end of our dining room table. My files and shelves fill a nice big walk-in closet.

No more! Now my computer sits (and I slouch) at the end of our dining room table. My files and shelves fill a nice big walk-in closet. And I am so happy to be free of twenty-two years of accumulated notes, books, papers, drawings, samples (like tile, paint and carpet), and stuff!

I guess you could say, these days I'm traveling light. My current writing space most resembles the modern feel of photo #5 above. What I'd really love to have is #6, with a simple laptop.

So where do you blog? (That crazy verb! “To blog.”) Do you have a special comfy chair, a table, a cleared space on your kitchen island? Or do you have an office with a real desk?

I’d love to know.

But beyond this, my son, be warned: the writing of many books is endless, and excessive devotion to books is wearying to the body.

Hey you - I'm missing you but I'm so crazy busy packing and a tad overwhelmed to say the least - if I come to mind pls lift a word heavenward for me x

Well a couple of summers ago I spent most of my Saturdays off by myself in my car - I use to call it my "tent of meeting" and I had the best summer parked in various places studying and writing.

More recently it has been a big dark green chair pushed as close to the window as it will go - it looks out over my trees and bird feeders.

But as of Tuesday that will all be gone and I'm excited about my next writing space and creating a new one in my home. I'm also excited about getting back to deeper writing - I've been missing it lately and long for a bit more x

Have a great weekend lady - off to the land of nod I go x

I've taken over my hubby's comfy chair to blog. I used to sit at my desk in the living room, but he bought me a laptop, so that I can blog while he watches tv after the kids have gone to bed. I love it!

I alternate between three places--the dining room table, my bed and an upstairs enclosed porch. It depends on which place is the quietest! I hope to have my own office space by the end of the year, though. SHWEET!

First I don't consider myself to be a writer...so blogging, well it is new to me and I am just enjoying it...no aspirations
When our fourth child moved out I was left a room. For the first time in 26 years I have my own space.
I love it...I have my sewing machine set out!, a small kitchen table I painted serves as my little area for my lap top, the floor now holds photos from my youth and scrapbooks for high school...due to my weekly blog on recording my youth....my own space is great! Not decorated yet, but it also holds an 8 foot bookshelf for my prized readings. I can't hide for long before my four year old joins me to do a craft...it is our creative room!

Right now I have a big, heavy, crowded desk in dire need of refinishing. But we're getting a new one when we move! Don't know what kind yet. My favorite of those photos is the fourth one.

Sweet post!

I mostly blog at my desk in the study. There is far too much "stuff" in this room so the whole area needs a rethink.

I'm just getting around to reading these interesting posts of yours!
I normally blog on my deck in the early morning or early afternoons.....depends on if I get a good wireless connection for my laptop out there:) During the school months I tend to write in late afternoons in my living room which is really a reading room that contains my fave chair. I would rather write in a mountain cabin overlooking a lake.

Faith: LOL, I *thought* you might say something like this! I would rather write in a mountain cabin overlooking a lake. That's why I posted that reed chair (#9) out in the wilderness... it actually belonged to a famous writer, whose name escapes me at the moment. ღ

We're decluttering the garage at the moment, but the study is next on the list. Honest!!
