Temple Worship

Rather than simply directing a heavenly choir of angels, some people speculate that Lucifer himself was created as a musical instrument for worship—with hands for clapping and wind pipes for singing. The account of Satan's expulsion from heaven found in Isaiah 14:11-15 also mentions Day Star's harps. Regardless of the role he played, apparently Lucifer knew something about the three major instrument groups: strings, wind, and percussion.

It's interesting to note that the centrality of music arts during Israel's Temple worship was very likely intended to be a "type" of the heavenly worship taking place before the throne of God. To discover more see: "Old Testament Musical Intruments."

Related: Speaking Angels

Some Christians argue that angels speak, but do not sing. Check out "Do Angels Sing?" at GotQuestions.org. If that's true, there would be no need for a heavenly choir master, and Lucifer may have served as a heavenly orchestra conductor instead.

What say you? Was Lucifer (Satan) heaven's intended worship leader?

Sounds more like an orchestra conductor than a choirmaster to me. :-)

I don't know if he was a worship leader in the sense that we think of it, but he was definitely close to the Lord and at least participated in worship.

That's always been scary to me that someone who was created perfectly and saw the Lord in His glory, worshiped Him in person, could fall like that and turn so utterly into an enemy.

I believe he was beautiful and gifted in praise. Worship leader? I'm not sure. I think he was a worshipper. I do know that as the prince of the powers of the air, I think it profound that our airways transmit music, and so much of it does NOT glorify God. I think music has its origin in Worship but has become profane and instead of drawing people to God much of it has the power to pull them further away.

Very intriguing food for thought.

I believe that he was created to glorify God (as are we all, really), but I'm not sure about him being Heaven's worship leader. I'm still mulling it over. The most profound question I've ever been asked about Lucifer/Satan came from an 8 year old a few years ago in a Sunday School class I was teaching. This little girl wanted to know if God was all knowing (He is) and if He knows everything, past, present and future (He does), then why did He create Lucifer, knowing what he would do and become. A doozy of a question from an 8 year old, don't you think?

Barbara H.: Right, I agree, more like a conductor (or a one man band?) than a choir master...

In Word Adorning: You've said this so well: "I think music has its origin in Worship but has become profane and instead of drawing people to God much of it has the power to pull them further." Bless you for your insights. :~D

Jan Parrish: Thanks for stopping by! :~D

April: Yes, really a doozy of a question for an 8-yr old! (Where is she now?)

The best answer I've heard is that God allowed Satan (and man) to rebell so that we would have genuine free will. He wants his creatures to love him in freedom, rather than being compelled as robots.

Also, God had laid down his plan for redemption long before he created the world.

From the Answers in Genesis website:

"Revelation 13:8 states: '… And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.'

Think about this: before the universe was created, before time existed, before man was created, God knew that we (in Adam) would sin. He knew we would rebel against our Creator. And in the wisdom and love of God, in eternity, He predetermined a plan so that we could receive a free gift of salvation. In eternity, God planned for the Son of God to step into history to provide the ultimate sacrifice—the sinless Son of God would suffer sin’s penalty of death, be raised from the dead, thus providing a way of salvation. Hebrews 10:10 declares: 'By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.'"
