Mars Hill Church Pastor Speaks Out
Posted by e-Mom. Follow me on Twitter
Controversial lead pastor, Mark Driscoll, of Mars Hill Church in Seattle WA (USA) explains why there are no real "men" in many churches. He references Paul, John the Baptist, and King David. This short YouTube video clip is 1:54 mins. Thanks for joining me for this year's
31-Day Video Marathon.

I have to say I agree somewhat (and I do mean somewhat) with Mark Driscoll about SOME churches - but definitely not all. The church I grew up in had few young (20s - 30s) men, and my dad never attended with us. I would challenge Mark Driscoll to visit our church! Our pastor and a few other men went skydiving last week. A vast majority of them are avid hunters and fishermen - outdoorsmen all around. I'm pretty sure they would be appalled at being described as chick-i-fied, LOL! Besides, any man who loves Jesus is a real man in my book.
I've been seeing this man's name a lot on blogs.
Me AND my "chick-i-fied" husband are seething right now. How innovative is a guy who's sitting on his couch?! David is known for his slaughtering, but isn't he more known for the "love songs" he wrote and his "chick-i-fied" heart for God? And since when does God give those who make lots of money more value than those who are faithful?
He seems to be giving men a reason NOT to be involved in church. Are they really "dudes" or whiners who are too passive to step up to the plate and do something about it?
(Can you believe I actually waited to comment on this until I calmed down?)
Oh. My. This just makes me want to scream!!!! Or be a "dude" and punch him in the nose!
I'm breathing now. . .
perhaps....in some situation this could be right. but not all. and the opposite can be said too. where are the ruths, the esthers, the marys?
but you know...
they are there.
i know many faithful "davids", "johns"....not that they are perfect...(as the bible characters he mentioned definitely WERENT) but we are being perfected. and i see many hearts that are hungering for more of the the real thing.
ps got your comment about the israel trip (how it could have gotton crazy real fast) i agree. i have see my own friends put in jail for much less. (when i lived there on a couple occasions)
but i guess thats what touched my heart about this story. the spirit was definitely moving....well, GOD IS MOVING! and wow. there are stories that i can hardly believe that are happaning in that land today.
it's begun. :)
Sorry to comment again, but I wanted to clarify as it was early when I left my previous comment. I do agree with the video clip in that some churches have a scarcity of young men. I most certainly DO NOT AGREE that the men in the church are too girly.
He is pointing out a symptom, I guess, of problems in the organized church... I suppose all wives would be offended if their man goes to church but I know I married a REAL MAN so its cool, he can have his opinion then...he sure seems to know how to get attention on a topic...
April: Thanks for your thoughts. I loved this: Our pastor and a few other men went skydiving last week. A vast majority of them are avid hunters and fishermen - outdoorsmen all around.
I'm guessing you live outside a large metropolitan urban area? Mars Hill Church is in the heart of Seattle, and full of liberal unchuched folk. Driscoll's observations are a bit skewed IMHO.
His argument (according to his books) is based on the fact that the majority of the US population lives in cites. He sees a lot of secular elite males who come from broken homes, w/out Dads. A fascinating (and very sad) study.
BTW, I'm glad you came back again! :~D
Tami: Thanks for stopping by. :~D
TamiB.: Oh Wow, thanks for commenting. Sorry, I didn't mean to get you that riled up! Pastor Driscoll is controversial for a reason--evident in this video, and other places (like his books). I've taken an interest because Mars Hill Church happens to be 1/2 hour from our house--in a very dense urban environment. (And our daughter attended MH for a while. We visited a few times with her.)
We're all gifted differently, aren't we? Chacun son gout, eh This "flavor" of church does little for e-Dad or me, yet Pastor Driscoll has attracted thousands in our very secular, liberal, unchurched city. Mars Hill is truly a mega-church. We scratch our heads, but praise the Lord that someone is reaching "sissified" unfathered young men. So there you go!
I'm sure we'd LOVE your church-- especially the gifted music/arts pastor there. :~D
Sorry, I can't help but smile broadly at your remarks. Love you!
Roo: This is awesome: i know many faithful "davids", "johns"....not that they are perfect...(as the bible characters he mentioned definitely WERENT) but we are being perfected. and i see many hearts that are hungering for more of the the real thing. A very astute and caring observation, Roo.
Thanks for your feedback about that situation in Jerusalem. Thank God (literally) the situation did not go bad in a big hurry.
Mac an Rothaich: You know, you could be right: he sure seems to know how to get attention on a topic... There's might be a bit of theatrics going on here. I wonder how much he says to generate a reaction? Good insight!
Blessings. :~D
My, my, my, you cracked me up tonight, e-Mom! I wasn't familiar with your phrase "Chacun son gout" so I googled it and found it basically means, "To each his own" which reminds me of another blog we were both on today! Thanks for the laugh.
And when, oh when, can we do coffee? Got any plans to be in the Midwest any time soon?
Love you, babe!
Tami: Chock that French phrase up to my Canadian upbringing... LOL, glad you learned something new here tonight!!! Tee hee.
Sure, coffee any time. :~D (Sadly, no plans to be in the midwest any time soon.)
ps wanted to let you know emom that my hubby LOVED this clip. :)
Roo: LOL, that's great! Thanks for sharing it with him. :~D
Had a long comment re: Mark Driscoll and Blogger ate it...don't have time to rewrite it all so I'll just say interesting blog, and thanks for visiting mine!
