Beth Moore's Study: "Stepping Up"

YouTube Video: Intro to Stepping Up by Beth Moore

A Journey Through the Psalms of Ascent

Most of us "siestas" love Beth Moore! But OK I admit it, I haven’t been a huge fan of the psalms—until now.

Last fall, I began Beth's awesome in-depth study Stepping Up in the 15 Psalms of Ascent on Monday nights with our church (psalms 120-134). The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Week after week, the verses guided my own petitions and praises to God. I’m grateful that He knew in advance how deeply I needed this kind of encouragement from His Word.

Beth Moore Teaches in Israel

There are four DVDs which accompany Stepping Up: A Journey Through the Psalms of Ascent Leader's Kit.
Many segments are shot on location in and around Jerusalem. (See the introductory video clip above.)
The video footage really brings the verses to life. Did you know these are the psalms ancient Jewish pilgrims actually sang while travelling up to the Holy city for their three annual festivals? It's exciting to explore the meaning of these important feasts with Beth as she teaches from the foot of the Temple Mount, or strolls along a rocky desert byway.

Say it. Work it. Pray it.

Beautifully compiled and illustrated, Beth Moore’s study guide incorporates a unique approach which encourages her students to “Say it. Work it. Pray it.” What a thorough way to dig deeply into God's Word!

The 15 Psalms of Ascent are like a "psalter within a psalter." Themes such as unity, joy and gratitude, redemption, repentance, the power of blessings, facing ridicule, and more are explored in detail. Beth’s characteristic enthusiasm and inimitable writing style helped to propel me forward during my study times.

This treasured collection of psalms will help every modern pilgrim on their journey toward greater intimacy with God. I highly recommend it.

Pure Poetry: Psalm 133

A song of ascents. Of David.

How good and pleasant it is
when brothers live together in unity!

It is like precious oil poured on the head,
running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron's beard,
down upon the collar of his robes.

It is as if the dew of Hermon
were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the LORD bestows his blessing,
even life forevermore.

I really do love the Psalms. So much depth and refreshment. I especially enjoy Psalms 139. What joy to know we are not accidentally here, we were formed just how we are. It gives me purpose and joy to know God chose every little detail about me - even the things I don't like.

Beth Moore is definitely on my reading list!

I don't so much have a favourite psalm as favourite verses from the Book of Psalms. If I had to choose one it would be "Be still and know that I am God" (46:10)it seems to sum everything up!

Can you, or any of your readers, recommend a good book about Exodus (or else the whole story of Moses and the law)?

I love all the Psalms...currently my favorite it Psalm 67. It helps me to remember that everything happens for a reason and God is always smiling upon us with blessings. My husband has been away for over a year now (military) and I often refer to the Psalms for courage - for myself and my son.

Buffy: Yes, Psalm 46:10 is a favourite verse of mine too.
I'm sorry can't recommend a good book on the story of Moses, the Lawgiver. You might try a good Bible commentary (eg. IVP's Bible Background Commentary) or Encountering the Old Testament by Arnold & Beyer.

Stacy: I hope you give Beth's studies a try.

Julie: Psalm 113 is full of praise!

monk5: Yes, our help! Ps 121 is a Psalm of Ascent.

Jenn: Your mother would love this study... Psalms 103 & 23... awesome.

Sacred: Thanks for sharing Psalm 24:4-5!

BrineS: Amen. Psalm 91 "my refuge and my fortress..."

Andrea: "I usually flip through looking for the highlighting!" Smart lady!!!

Lisa: Yes, when we confess, he is faithful to forgive. Ps 51 is a favorite. :~D

Jamie: Psalm 67 is unique in that it promises salvation to ALL the nations... at a time when only the Jews had knowledge of the One True God. May the Lord bring your DH home safe and sound.

Pslam 139 is a particular favorite. It has helped me love my sons more effectively, undestanding that God understands why they do things the way they do it.

Whenever I have a challenge, I pray psalms over my life. God always fulfills his promise of protection in psalms. He's my Knight in Shining Armor!
