Quotes by Christian Counselor Jean Lush
"I think God knows how important beauty is to us. We have but to open our eyes to know He wanted us to be surrounded by beautiful things… Think of how you feel when beauty surrounds you, and when it doesn’t."
1. Beauty Creates Energy
"Imagine yourself sitting on the steps of a tenement house. You yawn with lazy despair. The ground is nearly bare, with an occasional clump of weeks cut to resemble grass. Garbage oozes over an open garbage can… You bend to pull one of the millions of weeks growing in the cracks in the walk that leads into the litter-lined street…
Not a pretty sight. Lack of beauty—ugliness—brings grief to the spirit. Shabbiness and disorder drain us.
Now imagine the same place. A woman moves in next door. She scrubs and cleans inside and out, then sands and paints the trim a sparkling white. She waters the parched and patchy yard and scatters grass seed… You ask if she’d mind if you worked together… Together you plant flowers and shrubs. You gather discarded brinks and create a garden full of forget-me-nots and candytufts…
Can you feel the difference? Beauty creates energy. It lifts the spirit."
2. Beauty Debriefs Tension
"Tension, anxiety, stress, depression, anger—all can be defused by beauty.
For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies; Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

"Just as beauty does not require a flawless face, neither does it require youth. Don’t let lack of money keep you from developing an attractive outward appearance. You may not be out to impress kings and prince with your great beauty, but wouldn’t it be nice to feel and look stunning? Start with one dress or outfit in which you look absolutely marvelous and build from there. Improving your appearance improves your self-esteem.
Now be honest: Don’t you like your husband to look good? A woman wants to be proud of her man too."
Excerpts are quoted from Emotional Phases of a Woman’s Life by Jean Lush & Patricia H. Rushford. Endorsement by Dr. James Dobson.

Great topic! I agree, beauty matters! I'm not at all wealthy and can't afford fancy things, but as the author you quoted implied, money is not a barrier to beauty.
Yes, it's important to me to have beautiful things around and to feel beautiful. Not out of vanity, though I'm sure I have an eensy speck of vanity in there, lol, but for the reasons you gave. God created beauty and He inspires beauty and He gave us an objective sense of beauty in creation. So, to think beauty doesn't matter is to really go against God's order of creation.
Thanks for the link to my spring article!
What a great article.
I agree: "Beauty creates energy. It lifts the spirit."
I'm afraid beauty is underrated and misunderstood in Christendom. We think it vain or indulgent, I guess. I appreciate the points you've outlined here. I like to seek beauty in my surroundings as well as look my best, but many Christians don't see the worth in it. Have you seen that to be the case too?
Interesting topic, e-Mom. Thanks.
I definitely try to make myself feel beautiful every day. I'm actually a certified image consultant and love helping other women find the right look for them. I might even be a consultant to the stars - I once blogged about Jennifer Love Hewitt's poor choices in clothing, and immediately thereafter she started dressing the way I had advised. Coincidence???
I find this to be a balancing act for me - you see I can become either obsessed by it or become down with it. I find it hard to spend money on myself for things that are 'beautiful' whether it be clothes or even simple things for home - believe it or not I am one of those women who have a hard time spending lol
I love Tami's comment that she tries to find beauty in things around her - I agree and am with her on that one.
However saying that I truly believe that God wants us to know we are beautiful and we need to acknowledge and rest in that truth and "believe" it!!
Thanks for the thought provoking post today.
oh emom -- i love the photo at the top of your post.
i agree -- beauty does matter. its soooo amazing how each person interprets beauty through different eyes. its true "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".
often i find what i find sooo beautiful, makes my hubby shake his head in wonder and amusement. :) so thankful for the variety God put in us!
This is fabulous my friend.. this is actually pretty deep
It's so true that beauty does so much for us emotionally!
God's creation is certainly filled with all kinds of beauty...
And you know, when I let things get too cluttered around the house, it certainly does nothing good for my mood!
I think tomorrow I'll be doing some beautifying around here...;)
Blessings,
Tammy
Jennifer: Absolutely true, as you've discovered: Money is not a barrier to beauty. Indeed, as modern architect Mies Van der Rohe said, "Less is more."
I agree: So, to think beauty doesn't matter is to really go against God's order of creation. In fact, decay (and its accompanying ulginess) are the result of sin, and were not part of God's original plan. :~D
Jan: Like you, I feel encouraged by beauty too. :~D
TamiB: Sadly, your question about Christians not seeing the worth in beauty seems true--but maybe it's only on the surface. I suspect that believers who fall into that camp lack confidence in their ability to create beauty. (If we were all equally talented, we wouldn't need each other!)
God made me artistic, and so I have no problem assigning value to beauty. I see infinite beauty in God's creation, and I feel blessed to be able to emulate Him in that way.
I do try to let others shine where they are gifted though (music or writing or math... for example) even if they don't, or can't, appreciate the visual world the way I do.
Jana: I can tell you feel good about the way you look, just by reading your blog. (I'm sure your successful weight loss program has helped.)
And I didn't know you were an image consultant. Awesome! Lol, maybe you ARE advising the stars. Hey, with your positive attitude, you should be!!!
Living Beyond: God made women the attractive gender. Men can be good-looking, but let's face it, if a woman really wants to, she can be gorgeous! Sometimes it just takes a little know-how.
You seem to have an artistic bent, as your infinite and beautiful variations on your blog have revealed. Maybe you could develop those talents a little more (classes? books?) so you can feel more confident about the purchases you do make.
Believe it or not, Jesus helps me when I go shopping... I pray beforehand, and I often come home with well-priced beautiful things He's picked out for me--seemingly in advance. :~D
Roo: So glad you like the photo! And you make me laugh. Yes, beauty IS in the eye of the beholder. And thank goodness for that.
Amy: It sounds like you've been thinking about this topic? (I know you're doing some excellent health and image-improving activities.) Blessings!
Tammy: I'm SO with you. Too much clutter drives me crazy. Happy de-cluttering this weekend... and enjoy the resulting mood shift. :~D
E-Mom what perfect advise - it's funny how I can pray for a parking spot and get it and yet I have NEVER thought about praying about buying myself something - I always struggle with buying anyway.
But thank you for your BEAUTIFUL advise :)
:) nice post
Sorry emom, I don't think I'm going to get around to my post, especially anytime soon. Thanks for thinking of me though. God obviously has given us his concept of beauty, especially in His creation. Otherwise we would have no standard for comparing.
E-mom,
Wonderful topic! I was talking to a group of women about this on Friday, and we had a fabulous discussion. I plan to visit again when I can read and focus better (not in pre-6:00 am time frames).
However, since the lovely thunder storm has me awake, I am taking time to view emails. :-) Thank you for dropping by my blog and saying hello. I hope to see you visit again soon.
Have a glorious day, and I will visit when the flooring is down.
It won't surprise you that I agree with everything you say here! I think beauty can be found in many different forms and I always feel closer to God, somehow, when I am surrounded by the beauty of nature.
Also, not taking care of your appearance is not kind to other people who have to look at you!
BTW the photo at the top of your post is a good illustration of how beauty can found in inexpensive things.
Oh, and thanks for the link :)
Living Beyond: Thanks for coming back, lady! (((Hugs)))
Donetta: Merci bien. :~D
Rachelle: Thanks for letting me know. I do appreciate it. :~D
Jerri Phillips: A thunder storm woke you up? Oh No! Thanks for stopping by to comment today. :~D
Buffy: Oh how true this is: Also, not taking care of your appearance is not kind to other people who have to look at you!
Thanks again for all your interesting posts on beauty. :~D
You have a very interesting and resourceful blog...Like it in here...Happy Monday.
I posted my tag!
Genny: Thank you very much. :~D
Karla: I'll be right over!
e-mom, I know your away. and i don't know how i missed this post since i visit your blog daily but it's truly a beautiful post- no pun intended.
it's an area God has been nudging me to take up as an important piece of my testimony of faith. i'm not much of a hair and makeup gal, and i know that's not the only scope of beauty being discussed. A verse that comes to mind is the one so often mis-used to negate the care of a woman's outward appearance.
"Do not let your adornment be merely outward- arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel- rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God." (1 Peter 3:3-4)
"Merely", meaning DO let your adornment be outward, but not just outward! The inward transformation WILL manifest itself with an outward appearance that is beautiful and not superficial!!!
You always write about the best topics here!!! I love it!
sheila
Sheila: Thanks for stopping by today. We're still in town...
You nailed the misinterpretation of 1 Pet 3:3-4 right on the head. I love the way you put this: "Merely", meaning DO let your adornment be outward, but not just outward! The inward transformation WILL manifest itself with an outward appearance that is beautiful and not superficial!!!
Brilliant! (((Hugs)))
