Our Wedding Day!
Welcome to June and the month of weddings. This was the two of us, 30 years ago this year. Sometimes we tease each other saying, "It's been like one long, lovely afternoon."
And actually, we really do mean it.
We were married in Canada, where I grew up. Our nuptials took place in a lovely stone Baptist church. Afterward, we hosted an hors d'oeuvres reception in a converted mansion—with 21 fireplaces—owned by a posh women's club. (My mother's idea.) We stood for a formal receiving line and then there were speeches. Several telegrams were read aloud before we cut the cake.
I came to faith in Christ in my late teens through the youth ministry of Young Life, and I migrated around a bit before settling down with the Baptists. My husband (a handsome dude, isn't he?) was attending an "on fire" Charismatic church south of the border at the time, so we had both pastors co-officiate at our wedding.
After we exchanged our vows, the American pastor offered, "You may kiss the bride." Always a showman, my new husband bent me over backward and planted a great big juicy one on my lips. The congregation gasped and then snickered. My proper Baptist minister (a Scotsman) attempted to regain control of the situation by intoning, "And I think a prrrrayer should be apprrrroprrrriate." We heard more snickers and some outright guffaws.
We dutifully bowed our heads.
The congregation gasped and then snickered. My proper Baptist minister (a Scotsman) attempted to regain control of the situation by intoning, "And I think a prrrrayer should be apprrrroprrrriate."
Since e-Dad and I were married in the October, we opted for brown tuxedos on the men, with celadon floor length gowns on the women. We had three groomsmen and three bridesmaids. I sewed my own satin gown and veil. Notice the quail feathers in my bridal bouquet. Aren't they unique—and reminiscent of autumn? (My dear mother again.)
We planned our ceremony to be something of a witness to our 200 guests, most of whom were not believers. Our music was mainly contemporary worship songs, and the ceremony was full of God-honoring Scripture. We had two guitar soloists—one from each country. As a further sign of our commitment, we chose to sign the legal documents in front of the whole congregation.
I walked down the aisle on my father's arm to classical organ music, and nearly didn't make it. My knees were literally knocking together! Have you ever had that experience? I hadn't—and fortunately, I haven't since!
This photo was taken on our way back up the aisle (more organ music) after we were introduced as Mister and Missus. The door to our adventure together as life partners had just flung open.
We closed our eyes, plugged our noses... and jumped!
Now tell me your story.

So sweet, everything about it.
Well, the prayer from your Baptist preacher was funny, but otherwise--s i g h...just romantically sweet. Y'all were darling! And you sewed your own gown? Geezaree, E-mom, I had no idea you could do that! Stunning!
Ooooo, and I have never heard of quail feathers in a bouquet! YOU definitely win the prize for originality there :).
Guess you'll be thinking a WHOLE lot about weddings in the near future :). Have fun! You'll be missed!!
What a nice wedding story. I loved hearing about all the Christian music played during the service - heard by the guests. It was neat to hear that you became a Christian through Young Life.
Oh, I loved this so much, emom! You both look wonderful- and so full of excitement as the door swings open to your future!
(We have a similar photo, which happens to be my favorite of our wedding photos, but though I've shown it before, I didn't happen to use it this time...)
I was especially struck by your mutual phrase...
"It's been like one long, lovely afternoon."
Wow...what a beautiful way to sum of your life together!
I'm sure it doesn't seem like 30 years at all! And now your daughter is about to walk down the isle...
Sigh...
Thank you for hosting this, emom!
I'll miss you while you're away but hope you have a wonderful, memorial time!
Hugs,
~Tammy
wow, you've got a lovely wedding!!
When I read your post, it was like I was also transported back in time and been there for your wedding as well. I'm blessed!
Loved reading your wedding story! Your dress is beautiful---well done. The joy you feel is evidenced in the picture. Can't wait to read more stories later today....and to write my own. Bless you.
I love your story! Growing up Baptist I love how you added a little spice! 30 years how awesome! God is so good to provide wonderful men to share life with isn't he! Thanks for hosting Marriage Monday!
This was fun, e-Mom. I enjoyed the pictures and a glimpse into your life.
E-Dad and e-Mom--a dude and a babe!
Great story, e-mom!! We also tried to make our wedding a bit of testimony to those there, as well.
Glad to hear you have roots in the Baptist church. My hubby is a Baptist pastor, although maybe a little more laid back than the one at your wedding!!
How Fun to hear of your life-changing day! Mine was life-changing as well! I actually noticed the quail feathers first thing in the picture. I don't know why my eyes were drawn to that over anything else but they were! Don't you marvel at how clueless we all were about marriage and yet, we probably thought we knew it all! Our youngest daughter is getting married in November and so, like you, I have one more life-changing event in my life!
Connie
I love this picture! I can just see the joy in both your faces! And you looked beautiful!
Thanks for hosting, as always!
Hi...I'm new to your blog having found you through this month's CWO meme list.
I posted this yesterday since it was our anniversary but had now plans to do another post today so I thought I would join with you.
I just love a Scottish accent...LOL!
Have a wonderful day!☺
Hey Congratulations on 30 years. We will celebrate our 23 in Oct (I love fall weddings). For our ceremony my beloved serenaded me down the isle (I don't remember the song because it was newly written by a friend). We recessed back up the aisle to a song by Yes. We also had 2 pastors (one from the church where we met and then our new pastor - it wasn't too awkward).
We had our reception at my parents house. Since many of our friends were musicians and hubby was in a Christian Rock band we just asked our friends to bring their instruments and we had a jam session/reception. It was loads of fun (and not loud for the more "mature" guests).
Thanks for the chance to reminisce.
Wow!!
This was great. You took us right there to your special day.
You looked stunning, and so HAPPY!
We also tried to make our ceremony a witness to our families.
And now you'll get to watch your daughter walk down that aisle. How wonderful and emotional this will be! (Now you get to be the nervous "mother of the bride!"
Thanks E-mom for sharing your day with us.
Sending lots of love and many hugs to you today♥
What a beautiful bride!!!!
You're story is a chick flick love story!!! I LOVE IT!!!
I'm smiling from ear to ear reading about your big kiss and the awkward moment in the church...that happened with me too!
My husband planted a big wet one on me when our minister said, "You may kiss the bride," too! I remember hearing someone in the audience let out a loud, "Woohoo!" I was sooooooo embarrassed! I was BRIGHT red blushing with a big smile on my face!
This was fun. Looking forward to reading everyone's!
Have a great break from the blog! I'll miss reading your awesome posts and will look forward to July's Marriage Monday!
Blessings

e-Mom, I just love this story!! The preacher bit cracked me up!! I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall.
Hubby and I had the same convictions you did about being a witness to possibly unsaved guests, and we had Scripture throughout and a concregational hymn sung. We tried to have everyone see Jesus from beginning to end, and we had a great Christian, wedding coordinator who helped make it happen.
And yes, your dude is handsome! I enjoyed your story and your pictures.
Be blessed with 30 more years!!
I loved this post! Although we were married by Assemblies of God, we both grew up Catholic, he was saved in a swinging chandelier Pentecostal church and I had been saved in a conservative Wesleyan church. It took me awhile to get used to hubby's passion in all things, ha ha. I can hear the accent as you write.
Lovely dress, what a talent!!!
Well, at least your Hubby kissed you!!! Great story!! It sounds like a beautiful ceremoney!
oh WOW emom. i just love that photo of you guys on your first date! that is perfect!

AWESOME!! Lovely prelude to the upcoming wedding of your daughter! Thanks for sharing the wonderful photographs.
I think that this is a lovely idea. I have posted a few photos of our wedding day but really, our story is a long one so I hope to write about it in the next few days.

What a treat this was to come and read.
I can't wait to read about your daughter's wedding.
We will miss you,
Lori
That sounds like something my DH would do. Beautiful photo's. Great post.
Have a wonderful time away e-mom bask in every crazy moment of this wonderful day. Well done on bringing up your daughter well.
I enjoyed reading your story. What a wonderful start to your marriage. Did you ever get any feedback from your guests about the way your arranged your day in part as a witness for them?
A HUGE thank you to everyone for publishing their touching (and often exciting) wedding stories. And as always, thank you for your comments.
Reading your posts, I was struck by how faithful the Lord was to each of us by providing exactly what we needed to make our wedding day special and memorable. In one case, He provided everything except the underwear and shoes! (See Irishwoman, Ruth MacCarthaigh's post.)
I hope you'll join us for Marriage Monday in July... the topic will be open this time.
Answers to your questions:
Connie Marie: NO! As a general rule, e-Dad does not kiss me like that in public places. :~D (We're pretty affectionate in private though... one of the things I really appreciate about my husband.)
Buffy: Good question. Many of my unsaved family members thought it was a bit over the top... but they definitely weren't church goers, nor did they have big church weddings.
I've always felt it was a shame that my husband and I are the only believers in our extended families. Our children, on the other hand, are vibrant Christians and wonderful witnesses. For that we are extremely grateful. Thanks for asking. :~D
sweet, i should have included a photo of our first-ish date lol
