For Shirkers and Slackers
Maybe you’re one of those people who opens their Bible at Genesis on January 1, and by December 31—right on schedule—you’re finishing up for the year in Revelation.
If that doesn’t sound like you, welcome to the club! Most of us aren’t as left-brained linear as that, or as disciplined. And really, why should we read the Bible straight through, from page 1 to page 879?
Today, I’d like to present a plan that makes more sense. And I’m going to give it a try myself. Here’s the skinny from Margie Haack at Ransom Fellowship who sold me on this unique concept. Listen to Margie's story...
Weekly Reading Cycle
"…When Denis discovered a read-through-the-Bible-plan which he called 'Reading for Biblical Literacy,' I was cautious about it. After all, I was a veteran who’d tried everything. It first came to his attention through Douglas Kelly’s book Why Pray? The basic plan dates from the time of the Puritans. It was given to him by Venus Brooks, a pastor from the Lumbee Indian tribe. Dr. Kelly writes, 'Its special value is that it gives you a varied diet by exposing you to different parts of Scripture each day while providing continuity... It is sheer grace, by causing you to return to the same section on the same day of the week all through the year.'
So throughout the year you read . . .
Sunday: The books of poetry.
Monday: The Pentateuch.
Tuesday: O.T. history.
Wednesday: O.T. history. (There is a lot of it.)
Thursday: O.T. prophets.
Friday: N.T. history.
Saturday: N.T. epistles.
So while having a fit of resolutions on a January 1st some years ago, I pulled it out, cut down the margins, folded it in half so it would fit in my Bible, and began.
I was not tempted to cheat, because there were no unsightly gaps. I knew it was going to take me longer than a year. And, after all, what is so inspired about doing it in a year? Nothing. I also liked not having to look up five different references in one day, you could just settle in and read an entire assignment which came from one book. It also had the advantage of giving more context because you read a whole chunk at a time rather than a few verses here and there.
The big difference between this plan and any other I had tried was that it was not tied to any particular date. On any day of the week, say it was Friday, I read the assigned portion and happily checked it off.
Clearly another advantage in the arrangement was that it helped me see the remarkable unity and interconnections that run through the entire Scripture. On Monday I would be reading about the covenant God made with Abraham and on Saturday Paul would be talking about the very same thing in Romans.
And I figured out at least one thing about Numbers.
If God cared enough about all those tribes and clans to count the people and to name them so we could look at them... [today], then it is a certain kind of evidence that God is mindful of every one of his people no matter how anonymous or insignificant we think we are. But the best thing by far was simply checking off a day’s portion not a DATE. I got through the whole Bible. It only took me a year and six months."

This sounds like a great plan! I'm in! I made it through the Bible in a year once - I think it was in high school. Never been able to do it again.
I'm seriously thinking about it. Though I just started a Beth Moore Bible study and I'm wanting to finish my own Bible study I started over a year ago. Maybe I'll make it a goal for the summer and be finished by New Years in 2009! :)
BTW, love your bookstore button. Did you make it? Where did you get the photo?
I'm working on going thru the bible this year as well! My hubby and i started in January
This sounds like a great study plan. I like the variety and flow to it. I would join in, but I start bible college classes next week and know that I will already have a full load of bible study with that.

Yeah, I like that study through the Bible plan. I'm doing a similar program with my church, each days reading is posted in the weekly bulletin.
Rahab's thread I agree is a great resource. I was glad when I bumped onto it myself.

Your study plan truly works, While I try ever so hard to "stick to my plan" I am often found jumping to the end like I would a novel.... :)
The pleasure has been in visiting you here today.

Great plan - I agree - I have a daily devotional that takes me all over the word and I like that too. This year I have one book in focus that I want to dig into, study, teach and memorize - Colossians. It may not quite take me a year but until it's in me I'll be reading and re-reading it along with my daily devotional.
I had to drag myself out of the OT and into the new with Colossians - don't get me wrong I love the New but the Old draws me time and time again - I guess it's b/c I love heritage so much.
Hope the plans goes well for you and that you find the Lord leading you deeper and deeper.
I love that plan! It does sound so good. I am thinking about it. My big problem is I am so scattered that I cannot commit to it long enough. Like I will be reading along and then become super interested in God's hands and then go off track and start looking for all things about that. Then it may take me another few places and by the time I finish that trail it has been a month so I fall behind! :) I guess my mind works kind of weird like that.
Much love,
Angela
I've done the Read Thru the Bible in a Year program twice, successfully, maybe a few weeks behind, but while I did it I would write notes about what was going on thru the year, it was fun to go back and read my short notes thru the years.
My sister just finished reading through the whole Bible in two years beginning from Genesis, all the cross references and everything! I am so proud of her. But she says that the best thing about it all was she grew in the Lord a lot. It is so good to read God's word, and to make an effort to take it all in and then do it... even better.
Thanks for the encouragement to find programs to work, e-Mom!
I thought I commented on this, weird, but I guess I didn't. I'm going to try this with you!
Jennifer: Great! (Maybe you commented on the post above or below?) :~D
